THE SILENT PASSER-BY

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

When I was a child, I didn’t have hair on my head just some stubs.
I liked to watch my friends play. I would join them now and then, but I preferred watching.
Everyday, we would see an old man walking by our playgroud, carrying an umbrella. He had big ears and a bald head. The moment my friends saw him pass by, they would shout, ” Hey, deaf and dumb, what’s the time?” They told me that he could neither hear nor speak.
It was early evening. I was standing at the gate of my house, when I saw the old man coming. I was alone. There were no friends around to shout the usual words of ‘greeting’.
But how could I let this man walk by without saying anything? So for the first time, I asked in a soft voice, ” Hey dumb and deaf, what’s the time?”.
The old man looked at me. Then he looked at his watch and replied, ” It’s five thirty.”
I ran inside the house and never shouted at the old man after that day.

Chetak the Brave Horse

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Chetak

In the 16th century AD, a King named Rana Pratap ruled over parts of Northwestern India. The king had to fight several battles in his lifetime. In most of his battles, his gallant horse named Chetak courageously fought with its master and guarded its master’s life.

Of the many battles that the king fought, the most important was the battle of Haldighati. Chetak lost its life in that battle, but it died as one of the greatest heroes of history.

During the battle, the army of Rana Pratap was only one fourth the size of the army of the enemy. But Chetak, just like its master, was not afraid. It galloped with the Rana on its back, towards the elephant on which the enemy was seated and raised its feet against the huge beast. The elephant panicked and turned round and in the process the sword attached to its trunk cut through one of Chetak’s legs.

With three legs, Chetak still lunged forward with its master. But soon Chetak understood that its master’s life was in danger. Then it refused to move forward. Turning back on its own, on three legs, it made an incredible leap over a stream, taking its master to safety, away from the battleground. Then it collapsed and died in its master’s lap.

A statue of Chetak still lives in the city of Udaipur in India.

Bad day

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Bad day
I was so close to tears. I could feel them just behind my eyelids threatening to spill out any second. I could feel my face crumpling into a little ball, my lip quivering…I needed a friend. I was surrounded by friends, but something was missing. And then I realized. I was having the worst day of my entire life, and NO ONE cared.

I recently gained the status of “class clown”, always the one they look toward for a laugh, and usually I’m happy to comply. But then I realized that due to my new position, nobody took me seriously any longer. Somehow everybody had forgotten that the class clown, no matter how silly, has feelings too.

So I walked alone, apart from my group, and cradled my tears, not allowing myself to cry, when I felt a presence beside me. I looked up and there was a stranger, a boy I’d never met.

“Are you okay?” he asked, and my tears began to fall.

“Thanks,” I said, smiling despite my tears.

“For what?” he asked. “I needed that.” I answered.

Box of kisses

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Box of kisse
One day a man punished his four-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became angry when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said,

“This is for you, Daddy.”

The man was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found out the box was empty. He yelled at her, stating,

“Don’t you know, when you give someone a present, there is supposed to be something inside?”

The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and cried,

“Oh, Daddy, it’s not empty at all. I blew kisses into the box. They’re all for you, Daddy.”

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness.

The king decided to eat as if nothing had happened. During the lunch he addressed his company.

“I’ve been told that somebody wants to poison me. As you can see I ate here with you calmly and I will do so tomorrow. I think I have nothing to fear. I always ruled my kingdom according to the laws, I never made restrictive measures, and everybody lives in prosperity. I don’t think that a king who is righteous needs to be afraid from his subjects” said the king and continued eating.

The traitors understood the words of the king and they decided not to poison him, because he was right.

He went up to the Castle of Buda but a guard stepped in his way.

“What do you want from the king?” asked the soldier.

“Today is the day of Matthias. My name is Matthias King.  I want to greet King Matthias.”

The soldier laughed at this statement and said.

“There is a difference between King Matthias and Matthias King as there is a difference between a king and a shoemaker.

The guard didn’t let the shoemaker to see the king so he left, but later, when King Matthias

Returning the favor

Friday, June 12th, 2009

King Matthias used to wander around the kingdom dressed as a poor wanderer. Nobody could recognize him. When it was dark he found a smith and he asked for shelter. The kind smith invited in the wanderer.

When the dinner was ready the smith and his wife asked their guest to join.

“Where two men can eat, the third won’t remain hungry either.”

They ate a simple soup. When they finished, the smith asked his wife to go to the inn for a bottle of wine.

The wife returned with empty hands. She said that the innkeeper can’t give a bottle of wine for free. The smith took down his sleeve and gave it to his wife.

“This sleeve worth a wine so exchange it”, said the smith.

“But this is your only sleeve”,said the wife.

“It doesn’t matter. I promised wine to my guest”, said the smith.

The woman left and soon she returned with a bottle of wine. They drank it.

“In reality I’m a smith as well. I work in the King’s palace in Buda. If you happen to go there just ask for smith Matthias.”

Then he thanked for the hospitality and he left next morning.

Three years have passed when the smith happened to show up in Buda. He remembered his friend’s invitation and he went to the guards.

“I seek smith Matthias”

“Yes” and one of the guard escorted him to the throne room.

The smith was astonished as he saw his smith friend was King Matthias in reality. He and the other lords had lunch. The smith nearly dropped the jar in his hand.

“What do you brought dear master?” asked the king

“My wife sent a jar of butter to the wife of smith Matthias in case he got married”

“Thank you very much my friend” King Matthias introduced the smith to his wife and to the court.

“Where hundred men can eat the 101st won’t remain hungry either.”

The smith joined and he ate delicious meals. When they finished the King began to speak.

“As you were kind to me to offer your supper when I was in need, I repaid the favor. But there is something else…”

King Matthias took off his mantle which was full of diamonds and he gave it to the smith.

“This is for your last sleeve which you exchanged to give me wine. It seems that this strong man can bear some mantles.” said the king.

The other lords as well followed his example.

In this way the smith returned home and he became rich for all of his life.

King Matthias always returns the favor and he always rewards the good.

The Right to Say No

Friday, March 13th, 2009

One day a beggar knocked at the door of a house, and when a woman opened the door, asked her for alms.
“I’ve nothing to give you,” said the woman. “Please go!”
The woman, who was newly married, lived with her mother-in-law. When her mother-in-law heard her refusing alms to the beggar she was furious.
“Who are you to refuse alms to this man!” she demanded.”I’m the mistress of the house!!”
Thus chastened, the daughter-in-law fled to her room.
“Thank you, kind lady,” said the beggar, ingratiatingly.
“All I asked for was a coin to buy food. I did not know she was not the mistress of the house.”
“She’s not!” snapped the woman.”She had no right to refuse you alms. I’m in charge here, and let me tell you something: you’re not getting a paisa from me!!”
And with that, she slammed the door in the beggar’s face.
